Berry Gordy III, known professionally as Berry Gordy Jr., is an American recording director, record producer, musician, film producer and television producer. He is best known as the founder of Motown Records and its subsidiaries, which has been the highest paying African-American company for decades. As a musician, he has composed or co-written several hits, including "Lonely Teardrops" and "That's Why", "Shop Around" and "Do You Love Me", all topping the charts. as the international hit "Reet Petite". As part of The Corporation, he wrote numerous hit songs for The Jackson 5, including "I Want You Back" and "ABC". As a record producer, he launched Miracles and signed with artists such as The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight & the Pips and Stevie Wonder. He is known to carefully direct the public image, costumes, manners and choreography of his actions. In 1988, Gordy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
