Howard Ellsworth Rollins Jr is an American actor in theater, film and television. Howard Rollins is best known for his roles as Andrew Young in King 1978, George Haley in the 1979 Roots: The Next Generations miniseries, Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the 1981 Ragtime films, Captain Davenport in the 1984 film A Soldier's Story and Virgil Tibbs on the crime drama In the Heat of the Night. In the fall of 1996, Rollins was diagnosed with AIDS. Six weeks later, he died at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital in New York at the age of 46, due to complications from AIDS-related lymphoma. Typically at the time, his editor claimed he had lymphoma, but his family later revealed that Rollins had been diagnosed with AIDS. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Baltimore, his hometown.

In the Heat of the Night, he played Investigator Virgil Tibbs, and his performance in Ragtime garnered him an Oscar nomination.
