Billy Bob Thornton experimented with screenplay along with acting and directing, usually focusing on stories set in the South and frequently collaborating with Tom Epperson. Examples include “A Family Thing” (1996) and “The Gift” (2000).
Thornton initially showed interest in directing more films but changed his mind following a disappointing experience with “All the Pretty Horses” (2000), in which the majority of his footage was cut against his wishes.
Among the honors and recognitions Thornton has received outside of his work in the film industry are the President’s Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, a Special Achievement Award from the National Board of Review, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He has also been nominated for an Emmy, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and one Screen Actors Guild Award.
Thornton worked in the film industry as well as pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter. During this time, he published four solo albums in addition to starting the rock group the Boxmasters.
