Find out about your rights when money is taken from your account without your permission. Money can only be taken from your account if you’ve authorised the transaction. If you notice a payment from your account that you didn’t authorise, you should contact your bank or other payment service provider immediately.
How long does a business have to dispute a check?
You generally have 60 days from when you received the bank statement showing the error to notify your bank about the problem.
Can a company require autopay?
A company cannot require you to repay a loan by automatic debit from your checking account as a condition for giving you a loan (unless the loan is an overdraft line of credit). Be wary of a company that pressures you to repay by automatic debit.
How many times will a company try to take a direct debit?
If your direct debit is returned unpaid, you will incur a charge from SSE Airtricity and your bank may also charge you a fee. If you don’t cancel your direct debit we will try to process it again immediately. We will attempt this three times in total. You will incur a charge for each unsuccessful attempt.

With autopay, some bills become out of sight and out of mind. As a result, there’s a risk of losing track of money being drafted from your account. Or, you become so accustomed to paying certain expenses that you fall into a rut of paying for a membership you never use.

Automatic payments could help your credit score, but only if you time the payment to happen before the credit card’s statement due date and around the same time you know there will be enough money into your bank account. Making even one late payment could ultimately hurt your credit score.
