Can I use my ATM card at any bank ATM?

You generally can use your debit card to withdraw money at an ATM owned by another bank, or at an ATM owned by a third-party provider in a location such as a convenience store or restaurant. Both your bank and the owner of the ATM could charge you a fee for the transaction by deducting it from your bank balance.

Can I use my Chinese bank card in America?

Generally, yes. Chinese UnionPay debit and credit cards issued by Chinese banks can clear on the albeit small UnionPay network in the US and also over the Discover network. UnionPay cards issued by non-Chinese banks — which includes banks such as ICBC USA — cannot clear over the Discover network.

Where can I get an ATM card in China?

There are several banks that you can be sure will accept your foreign ATM cards. There is the Bank of China, the Merchants Bank, HSBC, Citybank, and more recently the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. Still more banks are opening up to accept use by foreigners.

How much can you withdraw from an ATM in China?

Yes. You can withdraw funds from your account at any ATM that accepts Visa Cards (pretty much all of them). However, when you use ATMs of other banks, there will most likely be a minor charge involved, since your transaction is routed from the other bank to a local switch to Visa to your bank.

Can a debit card be used at an out of network ATM?

You can check with your bank to see if it’s part of such a network and often locate nearby ATMs in the network by searching online or via the bank’s mobile app. Some banks also don’t charge you for using out-of-network ATMs and even will refund what those ATMs charge you to use them.
