Known professionally as a point guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Gary Grant (born April 21, 1965) is a former American professional basketball player. Gary “The General” Grant was a football player at Canton McKinley High School and for the University of Michigan during his college career. Gary graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
A member of the Seattle SuperSonics, he was drafted in the 1988 NBA Draft, but he was moved to the Los Angeles Clippers just before the start of the 1988-89 season. He stayed with the team for seven years before going on to the New York Knicks, the Miami Heat, and the Portland Trail Blazers before returning to the Knicks. He appeared in the 1992 film Miracle Beach when he was still a member of the Los Angeles Clippers. Darius Morris, while playing for the 2010–11 Michigan Wolverines during the NCAA Division I men’s basketball season, broke Grant’s single-season assist mark, which he established with the 1987–88 squad, and set a new one.
The next season, Trey Burke surpassed Grant’s single-season assist total record of 61 assists. A number of Michigan records remain unbroken: career starts (128), career assists (731), career steals (total and per game), career minutes, career turnovers, single-season assists per game, single-season steals (total and per game, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for both), single-season turnovers, single-game assists, and single-game steals. Grant also holds several single-game records, including career assists and steals in a single game. Grant is married to Tammie Grant, with whom he has three children: Taryn, Mahogany, and Piper.
