Gary Anthony James Webb, better known as Gary Numan, is an English musician, singer, songwriter, composer and record producer. He entered the music industry as the leader of the new wave Tubeway Army. After releasing two albums with the band, he released his first solo album The Pleasure Principle in 1979, topping the UK Album Chart. While its commercial popularity peaked in the late 1970s and early 1980s with hits like "Are 'Friends' Electric?" and "Cars," it maintains a cult following. He has sold more than 10 million records. Numan is considered the pioneer of electronic music, with his sound signature consisting of large synth hooks transmitted through guitar effects pedals. He is also known for his distinctive voice and his androgynous "android" personality. In 2017, he received the Ivor Novello Prize, the Inspiration Prize, from the British Academy of Writers, Composers and Authors.
