“Amazon” wasn’t the company’s original name. Jeff Bezos originally wanted to give the company the magical sounding name “Cadabra.” He finally chose “Amazon” because he liked that the company would be named after the largest river in the world, hence the company’s original logo.

Bezos drew up the Amazon business plan on a road trip from New York to Seattle. In 1993, he left his job at D.E. Shaw to start Amazon from his garage. Bezos warned early investors that there was a 70% chance that it would fail. Bezos founded Amazon as an online bookstore, but always planned to expand to other products.
