The Columbia House name is still owned by Sony Music Entertainment, and is used under license. In December 2010, the Canadian branch went into bankruptcy, and its websites began redirecting visitors to a letter of explanation from the companies’ trustees in bankruptcy.
Why did Columbia House go out of business?
Aug. 10, 2015 marked the demise of one of the most storied pieces of late-20th-century cultural detritus, the mail-order CD club. The owners of Columbia House filed for bankruptcy on Monday, and several generations of American youth sighed with relief at the revelation that their debts were forgiven.
Do CD clubs still exist?
The most popular, and really the only big contender left, is the BMG music store. BMG has a few different CD clubs that feature a vast array of selections from all music genres. You can just as easily spend hours online shopping on the BMG web site, but instead of purchasing one or two CDs, you can select several.
Is the Columbia House DVD club worth it?
With the BMG club or Columbia House DVD movie club, your satisfaction is always guaranteed. Some of the titles listed in the BMG DVD Club can be quite expensive, especially new releases or more obscure titles. Therefore, it is best to stay away from these, unless the DVD is really desired or cannot be found elsewhere.

The BMG DVD Club now operates under the Columbia House DVD movie club name. BMG acquired Columbia House in 2005 and later BMG was acquired by Direct Brands, Inc. However, the Columbia House brand name for the DVD movie club has survived.
