Merle Ronald Haggard is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and country music player. Haggard was born in Oildale, California during the Great Depression. His childhood struggled after the death of his father and he was jailed many times when he was young. After being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he changed his life and began a successful career in country music. He was famous for his working class songs, sometimes with conformist and cynical themes contrasting with the anti-Vietnam sentiment prevailing in many popular music of the time. Between the 1960s and 1980s, he had 38 number one hits on the US country charts, some of which also entered Billboard's All-Generation Singles Chart. Haggard continued to release blockbuster albums throughout the 2000s
